About the Studio.
Julie's Artery was founded in 2000, as a way to bring the love of art to the local community, providing affordable art education and creative experiences. Julie began teaching art out of her home and then moved her classes in 2007 to the historic Masonic Building in downtown Zanesville where lessons were taught from 2007-2020. Events of 2020 marked the end of the Masonic studio and Julie’s ARTery moved to its current location at 53 S 7th Street in downtown Zanesville. Purchased by the Goodalls in 2016, the old Victorian house on 7th street was in need of much renovation. Determined to create a home for the arts in the community, restoration began on what once was a condemned drug house to what is now a treasure on the block. Offering a variety of classes and workshops for all ages, it continues to be a hub for creativity and learning in the city.
Did You Know…
Zanesville was recognized as the pottery capital of the world over a century ago! This region had abundant natural resources, including rich deposits of clay and silica. As early as 1820, a robust potting tradition existed in Zanesville which would grow into the manufacturing and production of Zanesville pottery, shipped out throughout the world.
Julie, whose maiden name was Schmid, discovered that she had a rich heritage in this wonderful pottery era, from her great, great grandfather. David Schmid, was a businessman in Zanesville and was experienced in the pottery industry. David owned the Zanesville Art Pottery from 1900 -1920. He later sold the pottery to Weller Pottery.
